Mixed.

On one hand, i'm very saddened by the news that Heath Ledger is dead.
O_O
I....yeah. Not sure what to do with that yet. All i can say is - R.I.P.

On the other hand, i'm very happy that Viggo Mortensen, Casey Affleck, Ellen Page, Tilda Swinton, and Cate Blanchett (x2!) were nominated for Oscars. Especially Viggo. 'Eastern Promises' was amazing, and made more so because of him (and that Russian accent...*wets self*). 'Bout time he got recognized for his talent(s).

Mmmmm....Viggo

So i went out tonight with Mike and saw "Eastern Promises". Basically Viggo Mortensen as a Russian mobster. And i haveto say, if he doesn't get AT LEAST a fucking oscar nod for that film, someone needs to die. First the accent and the fact that spoke Russian - AWESOME. At points, i was a puddle in my chair. Second, the story was preety damn good.

My only warning to you - it is VERY violent and bloody. From five mins in, i kid you not. If you don't care for gratuitous blood and gore, wait till it comes out on video.

In other news, the Loreena McKennitt show was AMAZING. I've been waiting almost 15 years to see her live in concert and she was soooooooooo worth the wait. The only minor complaint i had was that the guy on the drum kit was a lil too eager. He seemed to think he was at a Metallica concert rather than her show. He kinda ruined some of her songs for me, but i only say that because they sound MUCH better with NO DRUM KIT!

But the stage was lush (aka Arabian Nights done the RIGHT way!), the lighting was awesome, and i love when musicians talk to their audience. Or at the very least thank them for coming. I hate sitting at a show and the perosn you've paid a lot of $$$$ to see, won't acknowledge that you're even there. She had some good stories of her travels, but it was like having a short history lesson on the Celts = VERY COOL.

At one point ([info]mahyge, you'll appreciate this!),right before she started in on "Lady of Shallot" she was plucking a few strings of her harp and then she leaned into the mic and said ,
"I'm going to take a minute here......and change harps.*guy from offstage totes out the other harp*
This one *gestures to the one she was playing* isn't going to work. I could play 'Stairway to Heaven' on that one....*all laugh*"

Wow.....Stairway to Heaven on the harp. [info]mahyge, I leave it in your capable hands!

Inspiration is found in the most unlikely places.

Today was a typical day at the bookstore. That is until i started putting out the magazines we get from the UK. We carry a music magazine called "NME - New Musical Express" and they usually cover punk and rock acts from across the pond. When i saw the cover, i was AMAZED.
This is the image that greeted me )
Oh and i got my Moo personal/'business' cards in the mail today. THEY'RE SO WEE!!! I want more, LOL!

Worst (but best!) Storm Ever.

So i was heading out to work today about ten after 3pm, listened out the open windows in the house and heard rain so i grabbed my umbrella before heading outside. Well, by the time i got to the end of my street the umbrella no longer was much of a help. The wind was gusting and it wasn't "raining cats and dogs" anymore. Trying fucking ELEPHANTS. By the time i got to the bus stop, my shoes were waterlogged, my pants soaked and peanut sized hail had started to fall in torrents. The scary but cool thing was that the house-shaking thunder and lightning was RIGHT OVER ME, as i cowered under my umbrella, lol. I had to actually wave the bus driver down cos he didn't see me.

By the time i got to the bus station, it had gotten worse outside. I overheard reports on the driver's CB radio that the river in the valley had already reached over the bridge, cars had to pull over and stop cos the water was coming thru the doors, as well as buses. When i finally got onto a bus going to Edmonton, the rain was falling so hard, the driver had to go about 30 km cos he couldn't see and it wasn't until we reached Grant MacEwan downtown that the rain stopped.

So needless to say i spent the first half hour/45 mins of my shift in the ladies room under the hand dryer attempting to dry my socks and my uniform. I had to borrow someone else's shoes to wear cos mine were so waterlogged ( i had to wear them home too).

It was by far the worst thunderstorm i've ever witnessed ( and i've seen Manitoba thunderstorms and those are really bad) bUT IT WAS SO COOL.

Anyways, how are you?

So COOL and life stuff...

Artist premieres exhibition with diamond-studded human skull

I love when art goes "edgy"! I mean, it's MY kind of edgy...ya know human culture and all, lol. I love that it was inspired by an Aztec skull done in turquoise! COOL! In my opinion, i think the artist is depicting here what our consumerist culture has become. Albeit it IS a very abstract representation, but the point is there. But it also could just be me and my weirdness, lol

In other news, life is good but very busy. I'm trying to get used to my new work schedules and trying not to lose my sanity at the same time. I was really feeling the stress yesterday and i was almost to my breaking point (aka crying). I think my till suffered the brunt of my frustration, but i just wanted to throw it off the High Level Bridge, lol. I have significantly lowered my tolerance for idiots and people that cannot for the life of them understand that "No we don't carry that" means "WE DON'T HAVE IT. We cannot make it appear out of thin air. Take your complaining ass elsewhere, KTHNX." I think i should start taking lessons from a guy i work with at Staples. He doesn't pussyfoot around ppl who are being dumb or useless. He'll be rude to ppl who are rude, and be straightforward with ppl who cannot grasp simple concepts.

My birthday was really nice, and low key. People at my new work kept asking me what i was doing for it, and seemed surprised when i said that i was working. Well? It's what you do when you're birthday is on a wednesday, LOL!!! Mum was awesome and got me fried chicken and a chocolate mint cake (mmm fattening...) and my pressies were really nice. Still refuse to accept that i'm 27, lol. I'M 23 AND HOLDING!!!

Hee.

Well the new job is working out okay so far. Everyone is just so darn nice and helpful! But it is gonna take a while to get used to six day workweeks now. X_X.

Sometimes i love working in a bookstore. We got a bunch of Harry Potter OoTP stuff in, including a poster book (which i have in my lil hands) which i had to buy because of Weasley Twin Hotness.

It's times like these i wish i had a scanner. So i could spread the LOVE!

Good day.

So i went for my interview at Staples. And.....I GOT THE JOB!!! *dances* The assistant manager was SOO cool and we talked for about an hour, but most of it wasn't "interview" stuff, lol. And she said to me "Normally we get candidates to come in for a second interview, but......no! I'm gonna make this decision myself! Welcome aboard!"

LOL, I love her. So she is gonna call me later this week to give me an idea of a schedule. I only hope she doesn't ask to me to work the holiday Monday coming up, cos i can't. The buses in St. Albert don't run on Sundays OR Holidays (which BLOWS), and my folks are going out of town.

Also, the date i had planned for tommorow with Jon got moved to Saturday cos he screwed his back up at work so yeah. Saturday is better anyways, i have the whole weekend off and no parents around :D Heehee...
So we're gonna have a picnic and see Shrek 3....or see Shrek 3 and THEN have a picnic, LOL.

Karma is goood......very very good.

Busy busy

Can't believe i haven't updated in almost two weeks! Wtf is THAT about. Anyways, lotsa stuff been goin on. That Mike guy i went on two dates with, who was the subject of my last entry, well, the reason he sucks is because even tho he claims "no chemistry", he keeps checkin out my profile on plentyoffish.com (free dating site). So i dunno what to think. Does he wanna be just friends? Something more and he was just lying to me? Whatever.

Also, they say when it rains it pours. No sooner does one guy exit my life but 3 MORE come in. WOWZERS. And i can say for certain, one of them i'm really sweet on (the other two annoy me to no end :P). We were up chatting on MSN saturday night for 3 1/2 hours! We have so much in common it's almost scary, lol. And yes, we have our first date scheduled for wednesday this week. Oh yeah, his name is Jon :D

What else? Job searchin has gone well, i have an interview with London Drugs today in about and hour and a half, and another interview with Staples tommorow. I'm not completely sure i want to work for London Drugs....but a job is a job right? I'd really rather work for Staples. And i applied at the Staples downtown which is closer to my current job so it'll make that commuter pass worth the damn $75!

HOMG.

Total Geek Moment:

Kay, back sometime ago, i had finished a trilogy of books by this Canadian SF writer named Robert J. Sawyer. I took a chance and emailed him and told him how much i loved his books, made mention that i was an anthro major (the trilogy had to do with hominid evolution and neanderthals) and that i worked in a bookstore and asked him if i could get an autogrpahed copy of his books.

So he actually emailed me back and gave me much thanks for writing him and that he was actually gonna be in town doing another signing at Audrey's on Jasper Ave but if i wanted, he would drop by where i worked if i told him the address.

So, i go and check my University email and see that there is a message from him. (squee!) So apparently he called my manager today and made an appointment to do signing at our store (Coles in Edmonton Center) between 1 and 2pm on May 1st. That isn't the part i'm bouncing around for.

Included in this email was his CELL PHONE NUMBER.

Seriously? I could just cry i'm so happy right now. I have no words.
Btw, if you haven't read his stuff or haven't heard of him, go here.
Of his books i have read Hominids, Humans, Hybrids, Calculating God and Iterations (collection of short stories).

CANNOT.CONTAIN. JOY!!!!!

Whoa....Deep.

"Language is the autobiography of the human mind." - Max Müller

Hmmm. Makes me think of the people who use the f-word frequently ( as in every other word) or those people who use the word 'like' as every other word ( mostly teenagers).

What does their 'autobiography' say about their minds?
*contemplates*

*goes back to insane amounts of schoolwork omg*
